When Windjammer Barefoot Cruises went out of business in 2007 it left many fans of the sailing ship cruise experience saddened. Loyal guests had developed friendships with the crew members and of course a love affair with the elegant vessels and laid back lifestyle.
Fast forward to January 2012 and Charles Kropke, a noted entrepreneur with a desire to bring the adventure of Windjammer back to life. With the backing of investors Mr. Kropke purchased the S/V Mandalay, which had previously belonged to the Windjammer Barefoot fleet. Windjammer Sailing Adventures was born. After a thorough refurbishment which included upgrades to cabins and a new air-conditioning system, the ship makes it’s homeport in Grenada.
S/V Mandalay has comfortable accommodations for 58 guests in several cabin categories. Each cabin has it’s own shower and bathroom facilities, 110 volt AC power for American-style electrical plugs, wardrobe storage, and steward service. Windjammer Sailing Adventures is committed to keeping the traditions of ‘barefoot cruising’ alive with the familiar rum swizzles, bloody marys, crab races, story time, peanut butter pates, PPP parties, sleeping on deck and the playing of Amazing Grace. To help keep these traditions authentic the company has staffed the Mandalay with former Barefoot crew members.
The vessel had it’s inaugural voyage on July 22 and will offer weekly cruises to The Grenadines, departing Grenada on Sunday and returning Saturday.
